Willingdon Island

Man-made port island with a handful of large hotels, big lawns, harbour views and almost nothing to walk to.

Willingdon Island is entirely artificial — dredged up in the 1930s from the harbour bed under Robert Bristow's port scheme and named after the Viceroy. It holds the Cochin Port Trust, the naval base, the Southern Naval Command, the old Cochin Harbour Terminus, a container terminal and, tucked among them, four or five substantial hotels with lawns running down to the water. It is quiet, green, orderly and slightly eerie: wide avenues, colonial port bungalows, no shops, and cargo cranes turning at the end of the road.

The reason to stay is position and calm. You are eight minutes from Fort Kochi by boat, fifteen from Ernakulam by road, and you sleep with harbour traffic rather than horns outside the window. Room rates run ₹4,500 to ₹12,000 at the big properties along Bristow Road and the Taj Malabar end — genuinely the largest lawns and best pools in old Kochi. What you do not get is a neighbourhood. There is no market, no cluster of restaurants, no evening street. You eat in your hotel or you get in a vehicle.

At 9pm the island is silent. Streetlights, a security post, occasionally a container truck heading for the terminal. Locals will tell you it is safe to walk and they are right, but there is nothing to walk to beyond the seawall and the naval gates. The airline offices and shipping agencies that once made this a business address have thinned out. If your idea of an evening is a drink on a lawn watching ships slide past the harbour mouth, it is close to perfect. If it is wandering into somewhere you did not plan, it is a mistake.

This suits transit travellers, people flying out early, families who want a pool, and anyone whose Kochi week is really about the backwaters and needs a calm base with reliable service. Skip it if you are on a budget — there is almost nothing under ₹3,000 — or if you want to eat street food, or if you are travelling without wanting to book a car. Also note that large parts of the island are naval and port property where photography is restricted; do not point a long lens at the dockyard.

Where to stay in Willingdon Island

There are only a handful of choices and they are all substantial. The Taj Malabar at the island's northern tip has the best position in Kochi full stop — the lawn faces the harbour mouth and the ferry to Fort Kochi leaves from beside it — and runs ₹9,000 to ₹18,000. Along Bristow Road and Perumanoor Road you get large business hotels at ₹4,500 to ₹8,000 with pools, decent restaurants and airport transfers that actually turn up. Below that, a few guesthouses attached to port and government institutions sit at ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 but are institutional in the literal sense. What to avoid: anything marketing itself as 'near Willingdon Island' from across the bridge in Thoppumpady, which is an industrial stretch with no view and no walkable anything. Also avoid booking here for a Biennale trip — you will be crossing to Fort Kochi twice a day and would be better placed on Calvathy Road.
